The Idaho Department of Correction has come to rely heavily on KA Lite. The videos, exercises, and coach reports have been a tremendous asset, especially in unique settings where students are only housed at a facility for 90 days. KA Lite is even being used at the maximum-custody facility, where students use the program while locked in a single-man cage with a keyboard and a monitor protected by plexi-glass. Also, the feedback from staff and offenders using KA Lite has been overwhelmingly positive. Not only does it help instructors identify which educational deficiencies that these men and woman have, but it helps the Idaho Department of Correction as a whole by providing an immersive learning tool for offenders to focus on during their incarceration. Ashley Takami went around Yangon and Mandalay and distributed KA Lite to anyone who was interested in using it. Here is a list of places she visited and helped install KA Lite:
Deploying Organization: Khan Academy Burmese Translation
Testimonials: My initial intention was to install KA Lite in schools that lacked internet access, like the monastic school I first installed KA Lite. However, I soon realized that even schools with internet access wanted to use KA Lite because the internet connection in Myanmar is too slow to stream Youtube videos. In addition, it was more effective to install KA Lite in universities and private schools because they had the infrastructure and personnel to set up a KA Lite system. Since the KA Lite will be mainly used as an independent learning tool by university students and visitors, there is no need to train teachers or build curriculums either. Everyone's reaction to KA Lite was incredulity that there is such an amazing program and that it's free. They were all so eager to share it with others and couldn't wait for it to get installed in their school. I tried my best to video tape their reactions and I'll follow up with a link to my dropbox. Due to high demand, we are thinking of designating a place in Yangon where people who want KA Lite can pick up the windows installer and the 4000+ video files and pass it on to others. There were so many places that wanted the KA Lite that I did not have time to get around to all. One person also mentioned that she wanted to distribute KA Lite across the country in ethnic states where she works with certain schools.

Streetlight Schools is developing an accessible, affordable and innovative primary school model to address the achievement shortfall in primary education in South Africa. A part of this is using low-cost technology. We have set up a computer lab using Raspberry Pi's and a local server as part of our rotational model (technology-enabled learning, collaborative, project-based, instructional).
We work in an area that suffers frequent power-cuts and unreliable internet. In addition, our students come from low-income families and it is essential that we keep our program affordable. Using a highly innovative architectural ultra low-cost build for the computer box, and the combination of RPi's and Khan Lite has allowed us to resolve all of these issues- and the kids absolutely love it!

Our goal is to permit girls who are already in school to increase their academic attainment despite large class sizes, inadequately trained teachers, little educational material or access to classroom teaching tools. We implemented a pilot project to assess the effectiveness of KA Lite in achieving this objective. Phase 1 (Nov 2013): we downloaded KA Lite onto 15 USB keys to be used on the computers at the Integrated Learning Centre of our partner CAUSE Canada in Kabala. The target group was 60 girls who had some knowledge of computers and had volunteered to be Peer Literacy monitors. They had access to KA Lite for two sessions over two weekends for around three hours. They used it as a math tutorial to independently supplement classroom learning. In Feb 2014, we put KA Lite on two RPi Rachel devices (World Possible), which were set up as servers for 15 computers. Phase 2 (Apr 2014): Children in 4 schools in same district split up into control group and user group to again test KA Lite for grades 5, 8 and 12. The idea was to compare math score results as well as qualitative surveys to look at increases in confidence, views on the importance of education, etc. The children had access to the Integrated Learning Centre 2 hours per week for 14 weeks. However, the Ebola crisis and resulting school closures interrupted the program but then inspired CAUSE Canada to implement instead a mobile lab, which brought KA Lite and other educational programs out to the villages. This turned out to be hugely popular with students and parents.

KA Lite is being implemented in two under-resourced schools as part of a pilot programme, which has been undertaken in order to explore the effectiveness of the use of technology in education in rural and peri-urban schools, and then to design and test how an enabling ecosystem could be developed. KA Lite is currently implemented as an extra-curricular Math programme with selected learners in grades 4-9. Between 15 and 30 learners per grade use KA Lite twice a week during sessions held after school in their school's computer lab. Lessons are administered by project facilitators based at the schools and are aligned with the Math curriculum as far as possible.
Deploying Organization: MRP Foundation based in Durban, South Africa
Testimonials: Initial outcomes include increased interest in Math and a notable difference in performance in class, KA Lite learners standing out from their peers in terms of Math ability. A grade 7 child told us: "I like Maths because it is easier now than it was before. Before [KA Lite], Maths was not easy." In addition, teachers have reported increased confidence and improved understanding of English (the first language is isiZulu). Parents are excited by the changes they have seen in their children and one parent told us: "The future of our children looks bright."

KA Lite is being run off of two servers, which are currently broadcasting the system to classrooms of grades 1-4 (expanding to 6). We have 83 tablets – enough for each student to have their own. All the equipment was donated to our cause in an effort to forward the education mission of Shoulder to Shoulder, CREE – Regional Center for Educational Excellence - namely to provide free, quality bilingual education to the areas youth. The children are always excited to use the tablets and the KA Lite system, which is very easy for them to adapt to and begin using independently. The students are anxious for a new kind of education and a fresh interface, so KA Lite even has the power to make division problems fun!

Testimonials: "I would say or consider this program (KA Lite) very important because it's helpful for students, in order to reinforce the topics that the students already learned in class" -Alexander Alvarado (Grade 3 Teacher) "I enjoy working on KA Lite as it has a wide variety of topics in the form of mathematical problems and videos to watch and learn new things" -Karol Baca (1st in Class for KA Lite, Grade 3 pupil) "I like KA Lite as it is designed well and I like solving mathematical problems on KA Lite as they are very easy to solve, I also enjoy learning about plants & body parts from the science videos" -Lissy Gomez (2nd in Class for KA Lite, Grade 3 pupil) "By allowing the students to progress at their own pace, children who in everyday class cause problems out of general boredom can move ahead and begin pre-algebra much to their personal satisfaction, and not perturb others who need more time with their times tables. Personally, I love being able to watch videos and take notes on Organic Chemistry and Electrostatics after the children have left, and it warms my heart that by having this system here they have access to curriculum material from basic addition to HTML coding, literally the digital world at their fingertips." This is one of several deployments by 3 partners and 20 (and counting) secondary schools. As part of this deployment, KA Lite is used. Centres do not have internet connections, but a local server with an extra hard drive of 1 TB runs Wikipedia, KA Lite and the full Ubuntu repositories in a local ethernet.

Testimonials: KA Lite has been found useful for now as a video archive. We expect to follow up on a more targeted use of educational programmes available in the future. However, the challenge is not to distribute the hardware and software, but rather to maintain it and make local actors dig into the possibilities. Various challenges remain, but FAIR is open and committed to continue to develop the platform and the model that we base projects upon... as well as following up with our partners to improve current projects. KA Lite, Ubuntu, and Wikipedia are indeed the headlines of the contents provided.

We deployed KA Lite in French in a larger package called Haiti Internet In A Box (HIIAB). This is simply another laptop with a very large hard drive. It contains all of Wikipedia, Khan Academy and the Gutenberg Book Project; all of which is in English and French. We also have a large selection of books written in Creole which is spoken by 95% of Haitians. HIIAB will be provided to schools which either have no internet connection or simply can’t afford to use the service if it’s available. We've visited schools located in Port Au Prince, Ft. Liberte, Petit Goave and Medor, Haiti.

Children are leaders of tomorrow and we will be inspiring these young minds so that they can be transformed into greatness. Young children and growing toddlers learn and develop daily by observing their surroundings. Unfortunately children spend hours upon hours of wasted time on activities that do not benefit them. Our vision is to use that wasted time to turn ordinary children into extra ordinary leaders. Our goals: To train young minds to think, to equip young minds with the skills required to survive in this changing world, to make learning cost effective. What we offer: A full reading program, children’s seminars on various topics such as basic sign language, basic computer skills, facilitation skills, presentations skills, structured learning using games to stimulated development, interactive technology based mathematics programs, KA Lite program, activity based games such as beadwork, sand art, needlework, painting etc

My firm, Quanteq Technology Services, Ltd has customized KA Lite into a product called iQ, deployed on Raspberry Pis. We've included facility to load custom content, created functionality to use samba to add content and sped up large parts of the functionality for video scanning. We are also working to add custom assessments to support local testing systems using perseus. In partnership with AUN Yola, we deployed iQ to support education for over 20,000 vulnerable, at-risk, internally displaced and orphaned children in conflict ridden North East Nigeria as part of a USAID sponsored Technology Enhanced Learning Program. We also have quite a few local schools secured iQ to support blended learning and parents who are also using iQ to support afterschool and out-of-school learning for their kids.

ClickMaths believes that students and educators can reach their full potential through the use of freely-available, open-source technology. We continuously collaborate with like-minded organisations to leverage resources and work together towards the common goal of making education accessible and more effective for everyone in South Africa. In February 2015, we launched a pilot in Diepsloot using tablets and isiZulu language videos with about 50 full-time students, with support from the Diepsloot Foundation. Learning takes place in an adult learning centre with a server computer, a wifi router (no Internet connection) and donated iPads. KA Lite sessions take place 3 times a week (4 times for the students who are studying carpentry).

Bula and Hello Osea here from the Fiji Islands in the South Pacific. I am an IT Manager by profession and have recently downloaded and installed this for my daughter who is in primary school. I have found it to be an effective, powerful, and easy-to-navigate learning tool. My daughter loved it also and can't wait to get on it when they knock off school. We have slow Internet connection and the cost is very expensive. I've planned to install it on any students PC, laptop, schools labs, prison labs, villages or wherever they have a computer available in my free time. Thank you once again for this wonderful tool

Brea Miller is a Peace Corps Volunteer living in a small village in Burkina Faso, West Africa. They have a computer lab with ten computers at their one Lycée, where they have successfully downloaded KA Lite in English and installed it on one of their computers as a test run. With the help of people from Learning Equality and GitHub, they were able to successfully import the French content pack into their version of KA Lite. They're now off to install KA Lite with both English and French onto ten computers! Brea says, "I'm so appreciative of this offline learning program. Our 600 some students definitely appreciate it as well! Since our students to materials ratio is WAY off, KA Lite will be such an asset for improving our students access to better education. Thank you, KA Lite!!"

The “Biblioteca” project in Colcha aims to improve the community’s 18 primary school students’ educational performance by offering reinforcement workshops in the afternoon. KA Lite will provide additional information for children in the workshops. The workshops take advantage of working outside of regular school hours by complimenting the more formal education they receive in the classroom with a fun, creative, and flexible model reinforcing reading comprehension, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. By bridging these themes with activities based on the students’ interests, the students can develop the analytical skills necessary to grow academically while playing and pursuing their own interests and creativity.

Alma is happy to use KA Lite in our academic reinforcement project San Jose de Paranapura. San Jose de Paranapura is in the Loreto region of Peru. The academic reinforcement project in San Jose de Paranapura aims to improve the community’s 15 primary school students’ educational performance by offering reinforcement workshops in the afternoon. The workshops will take advantage of working outside of regular school hours by complimenting the more formal education they receive in the classroom with a fun, creative, and flexible model reinforcing creativity, communication, and critical thinking with a focus on reading comprehension and mathematical reasoning. By bridging these themes with fun and dynamic activities, the students can develop the analytical skills necessary to grow academically while having fun outside of the regular classroom environment. The project will also incorporate use of the often neglected XO academic computers given to all primary schools in Peru by the Ministry of Education in 2012. Unfortunately, the majority of these tools are left unused due to lack of training for teachers. The UGEL has already given special training sessions to our teacher and updated the XO programming from 2012 to 2016 versions. KA Lite is now running on each of these computers. This will provide children and youth in the community the opportunity to have access to more information and develop academically.

As technology becomes ever more integral in all levels of education and in every aspect of daily life, children without access to technological education are increasingly disadvantaged. For this reason, Alma has implemented computer classes with KA Lite within the primary school of the Chumpe campesino community located in the Marcapata District of Quispicanchi, Cusco. We work with 25 students from 5th and 6th grade to develop computer skills, reinforce reading comprehension and mathematical reasoning, and prepare them for success in secondary school. Alma also challenges students to think critically, creatively, and within the bounds of positive personal, social, and environmental values. Our approach has been to create summaries of the Ethiopian text books for biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and history, geography. The summaries we linked to graphics, animations, exercises and video tutorials, making it an integral part of it by adding links. We looked for high -quality video lectures off-line available under a Creative Commons-no-commercial license and found the Khan Academy. KA-lite has become our prime source for Mathematics and Science. Last year we installed a first version on the e-Learning summaries on RaspberryPI’s using KA-lite 0.16; each subject has its own RaspberryPI. The students are using the subtitles, because that give them a better understanding of the material. Their textbooks are in English as well. For maintainability and extended use possibilities we transferred the RaspberryPI e-Learning to a Linux-Ubuntu webserver.

Testimonials: The quality of the materials also has been recognized by the Ethiopian government, i.e., the Education Bureau of Addis Ababa, and they requested us to support them in introducing this e-learning system at governmental high schools, starting in Addis Ababa. We hope this opportunity will eventually make it available to Ethiopian students in Addis Ababa, and maybe also the rural areas - where there are more than 60 students in one class, and schools organize the classes in multiple shifts, because a shortage of teachers and class rooms.

Lycée Privé FITARIKANDRO is a private non confessional school created in 28 July 1961, located in the capital ANTANANARIVO, in Madagascar. The school is auto-financed and run by the school fees. There are 40 teachers, a nursery school, 5 classes in the primary school, 4 classes in the secondary school (first cycle), 5 classes in the secondary school (second cycle) with a total of 350 students between 5 y.o to 20 y.o. There is a lack of adequate additional education tools apart from a few old computers (3) with no internet connection and one T.V . It is rather a sad situation because the teachers and the students are all eager to use more modern materials. Apart from this general educational school, there is also a mechanical engineering school with 50 students. But it also lacks adequate basic tools. Since our 57 years of existence we have realized that we could improve our education system and have better results in all our national exams if we have more access to modern and adequate education materials.

We are an NGO that has installed 18 servers supporting KA Lite in 18 public high schools. We have a long history in Ethiopia and began installing learning systems about 4 years ago. Our servers also contain the Ethiopian STEM curriculum from grade 9 to 12. They are providing support to about 35,000 students. The systems are installed on a cost sharing basis with local school officials. We have one public library installation that is made available to the community . We are currently evaluating switching to Kolibri and upgrading all installations. We are a formal Peace Corps couple and have been serving Ethiopia many years. This is some of the best experiences we have had.

Just came back from Zambia. I held several workshops with teachers in Lusaka and one orphanage in Choma introducing Kolibri to them. The response is huge and are all ready to get started immediately they get some resources (Hardware). I did organize hardware for training purposes (Projector, Laptop, Raspberry PI HDD with full of Exported Libraries and installation Software for Kolibri 0.10.0) so any new installation can be done either remote per Teamviewer on phone. I have organized a workforce together with Teachers, technical personnel as a group to support any new queries coming from different Schools. I was able to install Kolibri in Choma in an Orphanage and did a short workshop with them on its use. II left a Raspberry Pi there, a Projector and 2 Samsung Tablets as a donation to be used via WIFI Gadget i installed. They were more than happy and are eager to use the system themselves and for the kids in helping them do homework as well as the preschool system they have. One important contact I had is a government girls school called Kabulonga with over 2000 students around. I did have a discussion with one of the responsible teachers and she really wants to have the system installed so she could start working on the curriculum. I am looking for hardware right now to get the school started and i would need more to be able to cover the whole school.

The Acesco Foundation´s School: Huellas de la Esperanza, is located in the south of the municipality of Malambo, a department of Atlántico, Colombia, and serves a population of approximately 270 children. 82% of the student population of Colegio Huellas lives in the Villa Esperanza neighborhood, mainly inhabited by families displaced by violence and in vulnerable conditions. The ACESO Foundation provided all the children in the school with a tablet, computers for each of the classrooms and different accessories needed to configure the local networks in each classroom. This implementation is presenting positive results in the quality of education. Meanwhile, teachers have found in Kolibri a tool that helps them improve their academic processes with each of their students. The Pandemic allowed us to see in Kolibri a solution to solve the problem of connectivity and access to quality educational content because Kolibri is now an everyday tool for our teachers and students. When KA Lite was first released in December of 2012, we tried to track known installations and budding partnerships on a map on the wall of our office.
As the trickle of installations turned into a flood, our wall map quickly became outdated. Over the past year and half, we've been in touch with hundreds of individuals and organizations using KA Lite, and we decided that it was time for more of these stories to be shared with the world.
The red pins on the map are individuals or organizations who have downloaded KA Lite, installed it, and registered with our central server. The green houses represent individuals or organizations with whom we have been in contact (by email, phone, or in-person meetings), who have been using KA Lite to enhance educational opportunities for the communities that they serve. The stories and photos included here were generously supplied by these incredible people.
